Catherine Harris: ‘We could become a city on a hill’

By Jimmy Patterson

Cathy Harris lost her husband to cancer in 2010. David Harris had been healed of the disease 24 years earlier, but when it returned, it did so with a force he could not overcome. Six months after the cancer reappeared, he was gone.

What remained, though, was a generosity and a spirituality that today further a legacy that continues in his absence. The Harris/Hutchison family legacy dates back two generations, when during the 1890s, David’s great-grandparents started a church in their Runnels County home, and his grandmother donated land for the Pioneer Memorial Methodist Church, on the Hutchison Ranch, in Spraberry in the 1950s. Cathy felt led to support The Way in the same manner.

“I feel like it’s my opportunity to pass along my husband’s heritage and the enhancement of God’s word” she said.

She and David have three sons. Jason, who works in computer software development in Atlanta; Adam, pastor of Rockhills Church in San Antonio, and Daniel, who supervises the family’s ranch, and is a certified spiritual director. Daniel’s wife, Kara, is the Coordinator of the Relationship Center & Weddings, at First United Methodist Church in Midland.

Mrs. Harris is a retired nurse and health educator. She has served on numerous boards, including the Midland County Child Welfare Board and Samaritan Counseling Center, and is Past President of the Texas School Nurses Organization.

Mrs. Harris feels led to help The Way Retreat Center because of its potential to help others in their spiritual walks.

“It’s not until you dig deeper that you really discover an intimacy with God,” she said. “When you try to fill the hole in your heart with other things, it doesn’t work. I think this retreat center can give people the time to ponder and define their relationship. I think The Way could become a City on a Hill.”

The last 24 hours of our capital campaign -- which saw you help us raise $11 million in a year -- featured some great examples of giving to The Way Retreat Center.
